Online Learning's Moment: Why Demand Outpaces Institutional Readiness
Lighthouse Education ConsortiumAugust 27, 2025
Worth a read for anyone building out an online strategy this year. The CHLOE 10 Report, covered here by Alison Griffin at Forbes, finds that nearly nine in ten colleges plan to expand online programs, but most chief online learning officers admit their institutions are structurally unprepared for that growth. The gap shows up everywhere: faculty development has plateaued even as adjuncts teach nearly half of online courses, AI strategy remains fragmented at most institutions, and community colleges, who serve the students most dependent on flexible options, report the least capacity to expand.
The demand for online learning isn't the hard part anymore. Building the operational structure to meet it well is.
